Substance Use Disorders

Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) are medical conditions characterized by the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol, drugs, and certain medications. These disorders involve a pattern of compulsive substance use despite negative consequences to physical health, mental well-being, and social functioning. SUDs can lead to significant changes in brain chemistry, affecting decision-making, behavior, and emotional regulation. They are influenced by a combination of genetic, environmental, psychological, and social factors. Effective management typically involves a combination of behavioral therapy, counseling, medication-assisted treatment, and social support, with the goal of reducing harmful use, preventing relapse, and promoting long-term recovery.
